Smilodon ("knife tooth" in ancient Greek) is an extinct genus of saber-toothed feline of the subfamily of macairodóntinos. The largest male Smilodon populator could weigh 350 kg, being the largest cat of all time along with the American lion Panthera leo atrox [1].
Appeared in North America in the late Pliocene, and became extinct in South America during the Great American Interchange, [2] due to climatic changes that occurred in the late Pleistocene and the modification of ecosystems, although it may the arrival of humans also contribute to extinction. [3] This is one of the best known prehistoric mammals by the general public, in part thanks to its distinctive saber tooth.
